The latest in a series of lectures by Instructor Linda Loveland Reid

Jacob Lawrence arrived in New York during the Harlem Renaissance, a period of explosion for black art, music and literature. His focus was American History, from Columbus to what he saw in the streets, painting with intelligence and a deep background in his subjects. Jacob’s Migration Seriesdepicts the relocation of more than 6 million African Americans, who, seeking a better life, moved from the rural South to the cities of the North in the years 1916 to 1970. This lecture will include other important black artists from the 1930’s to today. Lawrence is pictured with his wife and life partner, artist Gwendoline Knight.

Linda Loveland Reid has been an OLLI instructor for both Sonoma State and Dominican Universities. She holds a B.A. in History and Art History from SSU, graduating cum laude. Other interests include published novels, figurative and abstract oil painting, and directing community theater. Linda is chair of the SSU OLLI Art Club with over 200 members. LindaLovelandReid.com
