Discover how to build human powered contraptions from materials most people would put into the trash or recycling! Students will design and build their vehicles, learning how to combine various materials into upcycled sculptures.
Robert van de Walle is an award winning kinetic sculpture builder and racer. He will guide campers in creating works of their own design and imagination using materials he provides (abandoned/discarded bicycles, PVC pipe) as well as materials the campers will salvage from their own homes and neighborhoods (cardboard, Little Tikes play structures, plastic bottles, household items being "saved" for a dump run).
Fabrication techniques to be learned feature nontoxic or very low VOC materials, such as polyurethane construction glue. Some handheld power tools will be used under supervision, specifically a battery powered drill. Campers will learn how to collaborate, articulate ideas, develop a plan, improve gross and fine motor skills, and clean up to prepare for the next day's work.
These creations will be featured at Trashlantis, coming in October. On the last day, we will have a small parade at parental pick-up time to show off our creations.
