Artist Statement
Johnnie Gray-Nelson
As an artist and botanical enthusiast I have been influenced by both the natural world and the fantastical, I was born in Arkansas but moved to California as a youngster. From an early age, I knew I was different, uninterested in the normal pursuits of others my age. My mother, seeking the best path for me, even reached out to a psychic, who affirmed that I was to be an artist. I have pursued that passion, now in my country studio in Petaluma, CA.
It was challenging, as I was born without hands to hold a brush. Neither can I speak, but with weekly study and determination, I learned to hold a paintbrush in my teeth and communicate with my teacher through nodding my head and other physical cues. She taught me to see colors and choose the ones that speak to me on that day and in that moment. I learned that I could also communicate my emotions by how I moved the brush across the canvas - sometimes sideways and at other times, exuberantly upward. Occasionally my brush falls from my mouth, but I quickly resume my work, blending any debris into the painting and embracing this mixed media.
In addition to my exceptional teacher, Kathleen Sidjakov, I am especially grateful to my friend and advisor, Brooks Anderson, who has encouraged me to share with others not only my joy of expression through art, but the empowerment of knowing anything is possible for those who believe and persevere.
