Classes for Winter/Spring 2017

Cancellation Policy: Cancellation Prior to one week before start of class will be refunded or transferred, minus a $15 processing fee for each transfer or cancellation. (Transfer is good for one year.) Cancellation less than on week prior to first day of class or after class begins will not receive a refund or transfer. If the Sebastopol Center for the Arts cancels a class, you will receive a full refund.

MUSIC 

The Bija Children's Choir

The Bija Children's Choir is a 501c3 nonprofit program dedicated to educating and inspiring young people who love to sing, as well as enriching the community through quality multicultural performances.  Bija is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning seed of creation, which represents the Bija Choir's mission of sowing seeds of musical capability, confidence, and creativity among Sonoma County's youth.  Classes are held weekly Sept - June, leveled by age and ability, with no auditions for beginners.

Regular Season Schedule:

Wed:
5:15-6:15pm  Treble Choir for young women ages 13 & up (by audition)

Thurs:
2:30-3:15pm    Junior Rhythmics Choir ages 5-6
3:30-4:15pm    Preparatory Choir  ages 7-12
4:30-5:30pm    Concert Choir  ages 8-14 (by audition/invitation)

The Bija Choir 2016-2017 Season begins the week of Sept 15th and runs until June 8th, with no classes on holiday and spring breaks. Mid-season entry starts Jan 12th, 2017.
Tuition Fees:  $350 for Full Season Sept- June;  $250 for Mid-Season entry Jan-June;  $150 for 12 wk fall session (available to Junior and Preparatory students only);  There is a once-annual materials fee of $25 for all Bija Choir students.

Black And White Ink Drawing
Instructor: Sarah Voorhies

This series will explore drawing and painting in black and
white using India ink, sepia and ink washes. Black Chinese ink
and ink grinding stones are also available. Using a variety of
brushes and pens we’ll learn and work with techniques including
stippling, cross hatching and line drawing. Subject matter will
include free form warm up exercises, still lives, working from
nature on a small and large scale, abstractions, and tips for
cartooning. Matts are available for finished work.
This class is good for young artists beginning to explore the
possibilities of black and white as well as those experienced and
wanting more!  Ages 7-18.

Stone Carving
Instructor: Sarah Voorhies

Using California soapstone, a soft and beautifully grained colored rock, we’ll carve, sand, polish and wax sculptures ranging from small figurines and pendants to larger sculptural pieces of 5-6 pounds. Working with stone and big tools is an exciting experience, requiring a different approach than other sculptural forms. All the tools needed are provided, although you might want to bring your own pocket knife. Stone for 3 small projects is provided and one band-aid per student! More, or larger, pieces of stone are available for sale by the pound. The final class will include a modest gallery type showing of student work for family and friends.  Ages 7 and up.

Wednesday Awesome After-School Art

Ages 6-12
Children who join this great class can use this special time to relax, have fun and make their favorite ideas come to life. They'll explore learning formal (and not so formal) drawing techniques and experimenting with mediums, tools, textures, and doodles. They'll work with graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, soft pastels, pen and ink, collage, and paint. Progressive ongoing.

December - Holidaze in Art
Learn how to create fun doodles and turn them into cards, pictures, decorations, using subjects that can be used all year round. From fine art to doodles, this is a short session, with a discount.

Drawing, watercolor, pen and ink are all on the menu for this fun art class with the subject of illustrating what love and peace looks like to us and how can we "say" it without words.

It is all about SOUND and VISION - creating works using recorded words or music to accompany the visual art. All Mediums encouraged.
