Summer Sewing Camp for Children, Ages 8 to 12
Instructor: Gena Perdue
The many benefits of handwork include: hand-eye coordination; basic math skills, the ability to understand and follow a process from concept to completion; and the ability to focus on a project. The more subtle rewards are learning safety, preparation, and care for materials. Many of the created items have a practical use—napkins and tablecloth, a library tote, an apron, a dolly quilt, pillowcases. Respect and appreciation for the work of others is fostered and creativity is encouraged. One of the most far-reaching benefits of a traditional sewing circle is the social aspect. While there are times when quiet is required to learn important safety measures or to learn from others, most of the time the atmosphere in the classroom is social and conversational, not unlike a quilting bee.
In this series your student will learn: sewing safety, cutting simple patterns, pinning and pressing, basic machine sewing, straight stitching and quilting basics. Each session concludes a gallery tea featuring student work. Grandparents, parents, and other special friends are invited.
Tools list supplied with deposit. Students need to bring scissors and a machine.
